What You Are Watching

The film described as it happens, in the present tense. Nothing is interpreted here; this is what is on screen, and it is all you need to watch it.

Each flying pigeon sheds a rigid, spread-winged outline while the living bird continues bald beneath it. By evening the yard is crowded with abandoned forms. The keeper navigates them without looking up.

Among the bird shapes stands an old man made of feathers. It removes the brass whistle from the keeper and places it on its own chest. When it walks away, the pigeons land across its shoulders and follow it from the yard.

What Follows

What the film makes true, followed past the image until something is at stake. The question it leaves open is left open.

The film separates pattern from material. Feathers leave while the organism continues; therefore neither plumage nor any current substance is sufficient for identity. Yet the discarded pattern remains solid enough to obstruct the world.

The human double complicates the easy conclusion that the living body is the true keeper. For the pigeons, the relevant person may be a shape, gait and whistle, a stable pattern of signals through which food and order arrive.

Identity is thus relational. There may be no single fact answering which figure is “really” him independent of the capacities and histories of those doing the recognising.

The keeper’s failure to resist the transfer matters. Perhaps he understands that continuity does not require his original matter. Perhaps he sees a theft. The film withholds the verdict because identity disputes are often settled not by essence but by who follows whom when the two candidates walk apart.
