Cold Smoke, Siding Four

Smoke no longer indicates fire, and the thermal reader shows every wagon as cold. Certainty is available only through bare skin, one steel plate at a time.

What You Are Watching

The film described as it happens, in the present tense. Nothing is interpreted here; this is what is on screen, and it is all you need to watch it.

At a frozen coal siding, cold wagons pour smoke while the burning wagon appears clear. Battulga touches all sixty cars with one bare, reddened hand and chalks each plate. A younger worker marks them by sight; Battulga erases every mark and presses the man’s hand to the steel.

One unsmoking plate burns Battulga instantly. He returns with his hand bandaged and points the thermal reader at it. The screen remains uniformly blue. The two men must begin again, each with one working hand.

What Follows

What the film makes true, followed past the image until something is at stake. The question it leaves open is left open.

Most knowledge depends on proxies. Smoke, certificates, sensors and dashboards allow a finite observer to act across scales no body could inspect directly. The film breaks this economy by severing the relation between sign and cause.

A better instrument cannot repair a world in which the underlying correlation has failed. The thermal reader works perfectly as a device and fails completely as knowledge. Reliability belongs not to the instrument alone but to the chain connecting world, signal and interpretation.

Direct touch seems to escape mediation, but only by collapsing the distance that protects the observer. Certainty arrives as injury and covers only one square of steel for one moment. It cannot scale, persist or be delegated without trust.

The chalk mark is therefore not proof of temperature. It is a record of somebody having accepted the risk of contact. When one mark is made by sight, the archive becomes undecidable: identical symbols now encode two different procedures. A database can remain complete while its meaning has already been lost.
